About Deafblindness

For Professionals

Congenital Deafblindness For Professionals is written for an audience of therapists, teachers and other professions providing services for those born deafblind. If you work with a child, or adult, born with a diagnosed or suspected hearing and vision impairment, you will find information to increase your understanding of the experiences and supports you can provide.

While this website uses the term deafblind, others may use different terminology. It may be encompassed in such terms as dual sensory loss or impairment, multi-sensory impairment or multiple disabilities. The term congenital implies born with, but from a developmental perspective, also means that the combined hearing and vision impairment occurs before the acquisition of language.

Sections on assessment, communication, tactile learning and resources aim to help you understand how you can be a positive agent in the growth and development of a child or person born deafblind and how you can support the families and carers who may turn to you for information and guidance. You will notice the use of medical and professional terminology. For information using everyday language, try Congenital Deafblindness For Families & Carers.
